Parsing the work and the show
Thank you for the first cogent, properly critical in the best sense, and intelligent discussion regarding this show [“Building Up to One Big Mess,” June 30]. Sometimes ideas, i.e. new sculpturalism, are not fully or even correctly formed and/or deserve to be further scrutinized (and even challenged by architects), but squelching ideas and discourse, which is the key accomplishment thus far of the MOCA show and the process that led up to it, should never be tolerated.
I know many will go to the show and enjoy the work, because much of the work originally selected to represent the last 25 years is wonderfully good, innovative and creative, but the show itself does not model any type of architectural progress and as the article points out, may suggest more the weaknesses of the Los Angeles architecture community than its strengths.
