Be better to vets

-

Re “Years later, veterans still struggle to get bearings,” Column, July 3

Reading Steve Lopez’s column on the struggles of veterans and the way they are treated by our government makes me wonder sometimes as to how great our government is.

As a veteran of World War II, it is difficult for me to grapple with how poorly veterans are treated today. In my time, combat deaths were much higher. Today, many soldiers come back mentally and physically wounded and even suicidal.

The bottom line is that we should use whatever resources it takes to make veterans feel appreciated. Perhaps then we will not have 22 veterans taking their own lives every day.
