Doctors trying to wake Schumacher

- — Mike DiGiovanna

Michael Schumacher’s doctors have started trying to wake the Formula One great from the medically induced coma he has been in since a skiing accident last month, his manager said.

The 45-year-old Schumacher suffered serious head injuries when he fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock in the French resort of Meribel on Dec. 29. The seven-time F1 champion has been in an induced coma at Grenoble University Hospital since then, although his condition stabilized following surgery after initially being described as critical.

Donald Young, who beat Andy Murray at Indian Wells in 2011 in what he termed “the biggest win of my career,” will get another shot at the two-time Grand Slam champion Friday in a first-round Davis Cup match between the United States and Britain at San Diego.

Young, ranked 79th, was a surprise selection to replace the injured John Isner for the U.S. team when the draw for the weekend’s matches was announced Thursday.

Eighth-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium comfortably beat Yvonne Meusburger of Austria, 6-1, 6-3, in the Open GDF Suez at Paris to set up a quarterfinal against top-seeded Maria Sharapova.

Last year’s runner-up, Sara Errani, also reached the last eight in straight sets.

Flipkens converted all four of her break points against Meusburger, and the third-seeded Errani broke Karin Knapp’s serve five times to win their all-Italian match, 6-4, 6-3.

The Angels agreed to terms with corner infielder Chad Tracy on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. The agreement was confirmed by Alan Nero, Tracy’s agent.

Tracy, 33, is a left-handed hitter who was relegated to a pinch-hitting role with the Washington Nationals in 2012 and 2013 and had only 136 plate appearances in 92 games last season, when he hit .202 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in.

Left-hander Bruce Chen got his wish, agreeing to a $4.25-million, one-year contract to return to the Kansas City Royals, where he has spent the last five seasons.

Chen became a free agent after last season, but he made it clear that he wanted to return to the Royals. He’ll do so on a deal that pays $3.25 million this season with a mutual option at $5.5 million for 2015 with a $1-million buyout. The deal is subject to a physical, likely to take place Friday.
