Angels 4, Red Sox 4 (through 14 innings)

- — Mike DiGiovanna

KEY MOMENT:

Mike Trout lined a solo home run to right-center field in the eighth inning to tie the score, 3-3. Of his 26 homers this season, 19 have tied the score or given the Angels a lead. It marked the 10th time this season the Angels have played a game of 12 innings or more.

AT THE PLATE:

Hitless through six innings against Angels starter Garrett Richards, Dustin Pedroia (single), David Ortiz (RBI double) and Yoenis Cespedes (single) opened the seventh with hits. Shortstop Erick Aybar charged Mike Napoli’s slow roller with the intention of going home, but he bobbled the ball for an error, and Boston tied the score, 2-2. Daniel Nava followed with a potential double-play grounder that second baseman Howie Kendrick bobbled for an error, allowing the Red Sox to load the bases. Xander Bogaerts’ sacrifice fly gave Boston a 3-2 lead.

ON THE MOUND:

Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen minimized damage in the seventh, entering with the bases loaded and no outs and getting Bogaerts to hit a sacrifice fly, striking out Will Middlebrooks and getting Christian Vazquez to fly to center. Setup man Joe Smith struck out the side in the eighth, and Huston Street threw a scoreless ninth. Fernando Salas retired the side in order in the 10th and 11th, and Cam Bedrosian retired the side in order in the 12th. Richards gave up three runs — one earned — and three hits in 61⁄3 innings, striking out five and walking two.

IN THE FIELD:

With a runner on first and one out in the top of the ninth, Angels center fielder Josh Hamilton raced to the wall to catch Jackie Bradley Jr.’s drive. Hamilton then fired to Kendrick, who relayed a throw to first for an inning-ending double play that preserved a 3-3 tie. Bradley returned the favor in the bottom of the ninth, making a diving catch of Kendrick’s drive to the gap in right-center.

SURPRISE PARTY:

An emotional reunion played out on the stadium video board after the third inning when Navy Lt. Commander Carmichael A. Lee, an Orange County resident who was on active duty in Afghanistan, made a surprise visit to his wife, Esther, and young sons Connor and Austin, who were sitting behind the Angels dugout. Players from both teams joined fans in applauding.

ROTATION UPDATE:

The Angels have off days Monday and Thursday, but Manager Mike Scioscia said he would not use the first one to skip struggling left-hander C.J. Wilson in the rotation. Wilson, who has given up 29 earned runs and 43 hits in 232⁄3 innings of his last six starts, striking out 21 and walking 14, will pitch Wednesday night against Philadelphia.

UP NEXT:

Left-hander Hector Santiago (3-7, 3.84 ERA) will oppose Boston right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (3-4, 3.43 ERA) at Angel Stadium on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
