Obama casts his vote: He’s against paying college athletes

President Obama is against compensati­on for college athletes, saying it would “ruin the sense of college sports.”

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Obama says what does frustrate him, though, is seeing college coaches and the NCAA making huge amounts of money while an athlete gets banished after getting a tattoo or free use of a car. He says that’s unfair.

Compensati­on would “create a situation where there are bidding wars. How much does an Anthony Davis get paid as opposed to somebody else?” Obama said, referring to the power forward who played one season at Kentucky before heading to the NBA.

Hyo Joo Kim took the third-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s JTBC Founders Cup, finishing another long day in the dark on the 18th green.

The 19-year-old South Korean shot a six-underpar 66 to take a two-stroke lead over 2013 winner Stacy Lewis into the final round. She holed her short par putt on the final hole at 6:51 p.m. — 11 minutes after sunset.

Kim, who finished at 16-under 200, won the Evian Championsh­ip last year in France for her first major title.

Marco Dawson made a 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole for a five-under 67 and the second-round lead in the Champions Tour’s Tucson Conquistad­ores Classic in Arizona. Dawson, winless in 412 PGA Tour starts, had a 10-under 134 total, one better than Wes Short Jr. and Bart Bryant .

Dallas forward Amare Stoudemire has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for verbally abusing an official and not leaving the court in a timely manner after he was ejected from the Mavericks’ last game. . . . Boston guard Marcus Smart has been suspended for one game because he punched San Antonio’s Matt Bonner in the crotch.

Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale threw a bullpen session and said he’s making progress while recovering from a broken foot. He hopes to return in the second week of the regular season. . . . Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters , who underwent Tommy John surgery last June, is “unlikely” to begin the season with the team, Manager Buck Showalter said.

Authoritie­s stopped Iran soccer Coach Carlos Queiroz from leaving the country Saturday over accusation­s of an unpaid tax bill. The travel ban was lifted later in the day after talks with tax officials. The incident came one day after Queiroz, the former Real Madrid coach, resigned his post, citing “external pressures” despite signing a contract extension through 2018 six months ago.

Juergen Braehmer of Germany defeated compatriot Robin Krasniqi by technical knockout after nine rounds to retain his World Boxing Assn. lightheavy­weight belt in Rostock, Germany.

The son of a Mexican wrestling legend died early Saturday from a blow suffered in the ring in Tijuana. Pedro Aguayo Ramirez , known as Hijo del Perro Aguayo, fell unconsciou­s on the ropes, apparently after receiving a flying kick from Oscar Gutierrez , known as Rey Mysterio Jr. He was taken to a hospital a block away and died about 1:30 a.m. Aguayo, 35, had wrestled for 20 years and was the son of Pedro “Perro” Aguayo , now retired.

Chuck Bednarik , a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the last great two-way NFL players, died Saturday. He was 89. Obituary, B8.
