Amy’s Kitchen recalls meals

Amy’s Kitchen is recalling more than 73,000 cases of products containing organic spinach because of possible Listeria contamination.

Amy’s Kitchen, based in Petaluma, Calif., recalled 73,897 cases of 19 products after one of its spinach suppliers issued a recall notice because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to a news release posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

The recall affects some batches of vegetable lasagna, tofu vegetable lasagna, garden vegetable lasagna, gluten-free dairy-free vegetable lasagna, spinach pizza, stuffed pasta shells bowl, gluten-free tofu scramble breakfast wrap and enchilada verde whole meal.

The recalled products were made in January, February and March of this year. A list of specific products and dates can be found on the FDA’s website.

The recall affects products distributed to stores in the U.S. and Canada, the news release said.

A representative of Amy’s Kitchen would not say exactly how many items are being recalled but did say there are six to 12 items per case.

Infection with Listeria bacteria can cause fever and muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms and in serious cases, death. It is most dangerous to newborns, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. It is treated with antibiotics.

There have been no reports of illnesses related to the recalled products, according to the news release.

People are strongly encouraged not to eat the recalled items. Customers can return them to the store for a full refund, the release said.
