KEY MOMENT: Manager Don Mattingly waited until the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th inning to insert closer Kenley Jansen into the game. Predictably, the move turned out to be too late. Jansen got Addison Russell to ground into a forceout that prevented Mike Baxter from scoring a walk- off run from third base, only to give up a sacrifice fly to the next batter, Chris Denorfia. Jansen inherited the three baserunners from Joel Peralta, who hadn’t pitched since April 23 because of nerve- related problems. Peralta was activated Monday from the disabled list.
AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers were limited to three hits, including a fly ball by Yasiel Puig that was lost in the lights by the outfielders and was recorded as a triple. Callaspo had a double in the third inning. The Dodgers’ only other hit was a two- out single by Adrian Gonzalez in the ninth inning.
ON THE MOUND: Zack Greinke pitched six innings, but his personal winless streak reached nine starts. Greinke gave up only three hits. He walked two and struck out five. Juan Nicasio, Adam Liberatore and Yimi Garcia each pitched an inning of relief to send the game into extra innings.
EXTRA BASES: Hector Olivera’s ascension to the major leagues could be delayed, as the $ 62.5- million infielder is on triple- A Oklahoma City’s seven- day disabled list and in Arizona rehabilitating a strained left hamstring. Mattingly described Olivera’s hamstring injury as mild, saying the Cuban was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain. Mattingly was not certain when Olivera could resume playing games. Olivera last played Saturday. He is batting .387 with one home run and one run batted in in seven games. Before the 30- year- old Olivera was promoted to triple A, he played in six games for double- A Tulsa, where he batted .318 with a home run and six RBIs. … Joc Pederson ranks sixth among National League outfielders in All- Star balloting, which is two places higher than he was last week. Gonzalez remains second among NL first basemen.
