Reds’ Chapman sets record

Cincinnati Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman set a major league record Sunday for the fastest to reach 500 strikeouts.

Chapman, who routinely throws 100 mph, reached the mark by striking out pinch- hitter Giovanny Urshela to end the 10th inning in Cincinnati’s 5- 3, 11- inning loss to Cleveland.

Here ached the milestone in 292 innings. The previous mark was by San Diego’s Craig Kimbrel, who got it in his 305th inning May 25.

Infielder Conor Gillaspie was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox. Gillaspie is batting .237 with three home runs and 15 runs batted in. . . . Righthande­r Kris Medlen will come off the Kansas City Royals’ disabled list Monday. Medlen last pitched in the majors in 2013 with Atlanta. He had elbow ligament- replacemen­t surgery in March 2014 and in 2010. . . . Chicago Cubs Manager Joe Maddon said that reliever Rafael Soriano will join the team Monday and Edwin Jackson will be designated for assignment.
