Miami imam’s sentence upheld
An 80-year-old Muslim cleric who was sentenced to 25 years in jail for financing the Taliban in Pakistan saw his sentence upheld at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
Hafiz Khan was sentenced for sending tens of thousands of dollars overseas to support the terrorist group.
The three-judge panel on Thursday unanimously affirmed Khan’s conviction on four terrorism support charges in 2013.
Khan was an imam at a Miami mosque before his 2011 arrest.
Evidence for his arrest came from FBI recordings of telephone calls and faceto-face conversations with an undercover informant. In the calls, Khan admitted he had sent more than $50,000 to Pakistan over three years.
