McIlroy might be recovered for PGA

The 97th PGA Championsh­ip just might have its defending champion in the field nextweek, after all.

Rory McIlroy, who ruptured a ligament in his left ankle playing soccer with friends in early July and hasn’t played since, posted a short workout video on Instagram in which he is balancing on foam pads and throwing a medicine ball to mimic a golf swing. His ankle does not appear to be taped and he doesn’t appear to be in pain.

McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty, said in a text message to Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte: “Rehab is going good and progressin­g well. Should know more later thisweek.” The PGA is nextweek at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

The Seattle Seahawks have activated All- Pro free safety Earl Thomas from the physically unable- to- perform list, raising hopes he’ll be ready for the regular- season opener. Thomas underwent off- season surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. ... Houston Texans star running back Arian Foster has a groin injury, Coach Bill O’Brien said Wednesday after practice. ... Arizona Cardinals first- round draft pick D. J. Humphries has a hyperexten­ded right knee. Humphries, an offensive tackle who was the 24th pick overall from Florida, slipped on the turf and limped off the field during Tuesday’s practice. Coach Bruce Arians said Wednesday that Humphries could be out up to aweek. ... Buffalo Bills running back Boobie Dixon could miss up to a month after pulling a calf muscle, posing a setback in his bid to secure a backup job. ... Jacksonvil­le Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee left practice early Wednesday with a hamstring injury. ... The San Francisco 49ers released cornerback Chris Cook, who underwent surgery in late October on a torn hamstring that prematurel­y ended his 2014 season and sent him to injured reserve. ... The father of Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been denied bond after being charged with two counts of attempted murder in a shooting at a bar in Rock Hill, S. C.

Jill Ellis has been rewarded for leading the U. S. womento the World Cup title with a contract extension. The U. S. Soccer Federation said that Ellis had agreed to a multi- year extension. That leaves Ellis in charge as the Americans prepare for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The federal government wants to see Lance Armstrong’s medical records from his treatments for cancer. The demand came in the government’s lawsuit to recover millions of dollars in sponsorshi­p money the U. S. Postal Service paid to Armstrong’s teams from1998- 2004. Penalties could approach $ 100 million.

Andy Murray’s first appearance at the Citi Open in nearly a decade ended quickly with a 6- 4, 4- 6, 7- 6 ( 4) loss to 53rd- ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia at Washington. Feliciano Lopez ended Lleyton Hewitt’s last appearance in the Citi Open with a 4- 6, 7- 5, 6- 3 second- round victory over the two- time major champion. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova pulled out of the women’s field, citing an injury to her lower left leg. ... Top- seeded Dominic Thiem extended his winning streak to nine matches by defeating fellow Austrian Andreas Haider- Maurer, 1- 6, 7- 6 ( 6), 6- 4, in the second round of the Generali Open at Kitzbuehel, Austria.
