Logano prevails
After a poor qualifying effort in Sprint Cup, Joey Logano shook off his frustration and won the Xfinity Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen, N.Y., outdueling Penske teammate Brad Keselowski. Logano, who started from the pole, kept Keselowski at bay after a restart with four laps to go in the 82-lap race.
Jack Beckman turned in the quickest funny-car pass in NHRA history for the second straight weekend, taking the No. 1 qualifying position in the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Kent, Wash., with a 3.912-second run at 322.88 mph. Other qualifying leaders were Richie Crampton (top fuel) and Chris McGaha (pro stock).
In motorcycle racing, Marc Marquez, a 22-year-old MotoGP star, completed Indianapolis’ 2.591mile, 14-turn road course in 1 minute 31.884 seconds to take a third straight pole in the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

In tennis, John Isner, seeded No. 8, held off fellow American
Steve Johnson, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9), in the Citi Open semifinals at Washington. Isner will next play No. 2 Kei Nishikori, who rallied to beat No. 1 Marin Cilic, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in a rematch of last year’s U.S. Open finalists. Sloane Stephens defeated No.
2-seeded Samantha Stosur, 7-6 (4), 6-0, to reach the women’s final against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who advanced when No. 1 Ekaterina Makarova withdrew before
the third set with the score 4-6, 6-3.
Karolina Pliskova advanced to her WTA Tour-best fifth final of the year, beating Varvara Lepchenko, 6-2, 7-5, in the Bank of the West Classic at Palo Alto. Pliskova will make her top-10 debut when the rankings are released Monday. Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Elina Svitolina.
