Kenyan wins world 800 title

At the world track and field championsh­ips in Beijing, world- record holder David Rudisha of Kenya won his secondworl­d title in the 800 meters, finishing in 1 minute 45.84 seconds.

In qualifying for the 200, Justin Gatlin won his opening heat in 20.19 seconds, two days after narrowly losing to Usain Bolt in the 100- meter final. Bolt cruised through the opening round in 20.28 seconds.

Top- seeded Gilles Simon of France was upset by Britain’s Aljaz Bedene, while two other high seeds survived upset bids during second- round play at the Winston- Salem ( N. C.) Open. Secondseed­ed Kevin Anderson of South Africa and No. 3 Jo- Wilfried Tsonga of France survived challenges, but seventh- seeded Sam Querrey lost to Italy’s Simone Bolelli, 7- 6 ( 7), 6- 7 ( 4), 7- 6 ( 9).

Caroline Wozniacki is feeling healthy, and it showed in another victory at the Connecticu­t Open. The four-time champion opened play in New Haven by cruising past American Alison Riske, 6- 0, 6- 4, to advance to the third round at the Connecticu­t Tennis Center.

Rutgers suspended star receiver Leonte Carroo and quarterbac­k Chris Laviano, along with three other players, for the first half of its season opener against Norfolk State for a curfew violation. Coach Kyle Flood said Laviano, who was competing to be the starting quarterbac­k, tried using a fake ID.

The Little League team from Bonita, Calif., hit two home runs and took full advantage of four errors, pulling away to an 11- 3 victory that eliminated Kentucky from the World Series at South Williamspo­rt, Pa. The California­ns will play the loser of the game Wednesday night between Texas and Pennsylvan­ia, with the winner of that game advancing to the championsh­ip of the U. S. bracket.

ESPN removed Curt Schilling from its broadcast team for the Little League World Series because of an anti- Muslim tweet.

Schilling retweeted a post that said, “Only 5- 10% of Muslims are extremists. In 1940, only 7% of Germans were Nazis. How’d that go?” The post was soon removed from his Twitter feed.

Villanova has hired USC’s Mark Jackson to succeed Vince Nicastro as the Wildcats’ athletic director.

The Calgary Flames completed the top task on their summer to- do list by signing captain Mark Giordano to a six- year contract extension worth $ 40.5 million.
