Smith tops Xfinity race

Regan Smith’s victory at Dover Internatio­nal Speedway in Delaware was his second on the NASCAR Xfinity series this season and moved within 36 points of series leader Chris Buescher with five races left. Buescher was eighth and has a 24-point lead over second-place Chase Elliott.

In the NASCAR Camping World Truck race at Las Vegas, John Wes Townley got his Athenian Motorsport­s Chevrolet home on limited fuel for the victory. The race’s most harrowing moment was Austin Theriault’s head-on crash into an unprotecte­d part of the wall. Theriault, driving Brad Keselowski Racing’s Ford, was helped from the truck and briefly stood before sitting down. He was airlifted to University Hospital for observatio­n.

Brittany Force broke both of her career marks with a 3.725-second pass at 331.53 mph to take the No. 1 spot in top-fuel qualifying in the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Mohnton, Pa. NHRA officials canceled the second session of qualifying because of persistent rain. Tony Elliott, 54, a former top race-car driver was among four Indiana men who died in a plane crash while traveling to the Notre Dame-Clemson football game at Walhalla, S.C. Elliott won the U.S. Auto Club national sprint car series championsh­ip in 1998 and 2000. The wreckage of the Piper PA-32 was found near Lake Hartwell on the Georgia-South Carolina border, Federal Aviation Administra­tion spokeswoma­n Kathleen Berger said. Authoritie­s have not given the cause of the crash. The other three were Charles Smith, 71; son Scott Smith, 44; and Scott Bibler, 51, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said.
