Three future title game sites set Etc.

- Staff and wire reports — Chris Dufresne

The College Football Playoff management committee Wednesday awarded three future championship games to Atlanta (2018), Santa Clara (2019) and New Orleans (2020).

Others in the running were Charlotte, Houston, San Antonio, Detroit, Minnesota and South Florida.

Pasadena and the Rose Bowl decided last spring not to bid for the 2020 game, but left open the possibility of hosting future championships.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP, said the bidding process was very competitive. And although northern, cold-weather cities were left out this time, the grand plan is to move the championship game all over the country.

This year’s title game will be held Jan. 11 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. The third title game will be held Jan. 9, 2017, in Tampa, Fla. The first title game was last year at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with Ohio State defeating Oregon. Matt Johnson threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns in Bowling Green’s 62-24 victory over Ohio. ... Hawaii interim Coach Chris Naeole is switching starting quarterbacks in an effort to revitalize the Rainbow Warriors. Naeole met with the media Wednesday for the first time since taking over for Norm Chow, whose dismissal came a day after the Warriors (2-7, 0-5 Mountain West) lost 58-7 to Air Force. The new coach is going with quarterback Ikaika Woolsey as the starter for Saturday’s game against Nevada Las Vegas over USC transfer Max Wittek, who has completed only 48% of his passes, with seven touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
