-

Marial Shayok had a careerhigh 17 points, London Perrantes added 15 and No. 6 Virginia powered past an opponent for the second consecutive game to reach the Charleston (S.C.) Classic final with an 87-52 victory over Long Beach State on Friday night.

The Cavaliers (3-1) will play George Mason on Sunday night in the championship game with the chance to completely prove that they’re back in form after being upset by George Washington. It’s hard to imagine there are many doubters after their performance against the 49ers (3-1).

Virginia used a 19-2 run early in the first half to take control and Long Beach State could not answer. The Cavaliers held their opponents to under 24% shooting in the opening half and led 41-23 at the break.

Nick Faust led Long Beach State with 13 points. The 49ers will face Oklahoma State on Sunday in the third-place game.

Long Beach State Coach Dan Monson said his team’s defense completely broke down when Virginia made its early run, although he acknowledged the Cavaliers had plenty to do with that.

“Once they got us down, they never let us get a breath to get us up,” he said.

Long Beach used a fast-paced style to outpoint Seton Hall on Thursday night, but the 49ers made only five baskets in the first half against the Cavaliers.

at No. 3 Maryland 65, Rider 68: Freshman Diamond Stone fueled a second-half surge that brought the Terrapins back from a 14-point deficit, and Jake Layman had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Maryland trailed 43-29 with 15:56 remaining and grabbed the lead for the first time when Rasheed Sulaimon scored on a runner in the lane with 5:19 left to make it 52-50.

No. 5 Duke 79, Virginia Commonwealth 71: Grayson Allen bounced back from an off game against Kentucky by scoring a career-high 30 points in the opening round of the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden. Allen, nine for 15 from the field with four threepointers, was the key to Duke’s 17-3 run that turned VCU’s last lead of the game, 54-53, into a comfortable 70-58 lead with 5:43 to play.

at No 15 California 70, East Carolina 62: Freshman Ivan Rabb had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Jaylen Brown added 16 points and 10 rebounds and the Bears overcame 15

turnovers.

Miami 90, No. 16 Utah 66: Sheldon McClellan scored 27 points in the Puerto Rico Tipoff and the Hurricanes shot 53% for their second consecutive lopsided victory.

No. 22 Butler 74, Temple 69: After two easy victories, the Bulldogs hung tough in a close game and rallied from a 12-point deficit despite shooting only 36% from the field. Tyler Lewis scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Xavier 86, at No. 24 Michigan 70: Trevon Bluiett scored 15 points, including a three-pointer that started a key 12-1 run in the second half, and the Musketeers won the first matchup of the teams since the 1989 NCAA tournament. Caris LeVert scored 29 points for Michigan, but the Wolverines gave up too many open shots — and Xavier made them pay.

at No. 25 Oregon 77, Savannah State 59: Chris Boucher scored 17 points and the Ducks shot 52% from the field.

Also: No. 4 Kansas has suspended junior guard Brannen Green for six games for unspecified conduct detrimental to the team. Coach Bill Self announced the suspension Friday with the Jayhawks (1-1) traveling to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational.
