Wawrinka stops Murray in ATP finals

Stan Wawrinka took the last semifinal spot at the ATP World Tour finals by beating Andy Murray, 7-6 (4), 6-4, Friday to wrap up the group stage at the season-ending tournament at London.

Wawrinka will play Swiss compatriot Roger Federer on Saturday, and Rafael Nadal will face Novak Djokovic. Nadal beat David Ferrer, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4, to finish the group stage unbeaten.

Teen wins title

At 19, Erik Jones became the youngest champion in NASCAR Truck Series history by finishing sixth in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida. Matt Crafton won the 200-mile race, but Jones needed only to finish 15th or better to wrap up the title. Austin Dillon had been the youngest series champion, winning the title in 2011 at 21.

Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, eliminated from title contention in earlier rounds of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup playoffs, swept the top two spots for the season-ending race Sunday at Homestead. Kyle Busch posted the third-fastest lap, best among the four Chase finalists.

Kevin Chappell had no trouble in a steady wind, shooting a fiveunder 65 on the Seaside Course that gave him a one-shot lead going into the weekend at the RSM Classic at St. Simons Island, Ga. Chappell was at 11-under 131.

Ha Na Jang shot a seven-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead over top-ranked Lydia Ko in the LPGA Tour’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championsh­ip at Naples, Fla. Jang was at a 10-under 134.

England’s Andy Sullivan shot his second straight 66 and took a one-stroke lead in the DP World Tour Championsh­ip, and Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy moved two shots ahead of rival Danny Willett after the second round at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo was second after a 64, and American Patrick Reed was third at nine under after a 65. McIlroy was tied for fourth at eight under after a 68.

Adam Scott closed with a bogey for a one-under 70 and a share of the lead with fellow Australian Peter Wilson after the second round of the Australian Masters at Melbourne. Wilson shot his second straight 67 to match Scott at eightunder 134 at Huntingdal­e.

James Driscoll birdied the final two holes at Spyglass Hill for a seven-under 65 and a one-stroke lead in the Pebble Beach Invitation­al. Driscoll was at seven-under 137.

The Dodgers added righthande­rs Jharel Cotton and Ross Stripling to their 40-man roster, making them ineligible to be selected by other teams in the Rule 5 draft next month.

The Detroit Tigers acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Atlanta Braves for left-handers Ian Krol and Gabe Speier .... Left-hander Rich Hill agreed to a $6-million, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics, who also acquired Liam Hendriks from the Toronto Blue Jays for fellow pitcher Jesse Chavez. . . . The Tampa Bay Rays claimed New York Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley off waivers while he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Charlie Scott, the first black player in any sport under scholarshi­p at North Carolina, and his coach, Dean Smith, were among those in this year’s College Basketball Hall of Fame class, which included Kansas State’s Rolando Blackman, Indiana’s Quinn Buckner, Ohio State’s John Havlicek and Long Beach State’s Ed Ratleff. Three coaches joined them: Lou Henson of New Mexico State and Illinois, Don Donoher of Dayton and the late C. Felton “Zip” Gayles of Langston University.

Washington Wizards forward Martell Webster is expected to sit out the entire NBA season after having surgery on his right hip. He had not appeared in a game this season because of the injury.

Mal Whitfield, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 800meter run and a Tuskegee Airman, died at 91. Story, B7.
