McIlroy within one of lead

Rory McIlroy shot the best round of the day to move within one shot of leader Andy Sullivan after the third round of the World Tour Championsh­ip at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. McIlroy’s sevenunder 65 at Jumeirah Golf Estates also puts him closer to the Race to Dubai title. McIlroy made up three shots on Sullivan (68) and moved him four strokes clear of Danny Willett, his closest challenger for the season-long Race to Dubai competitio­n. Sullivan was at a 16-under total of 200.

Kevin Kisner had a six-under 64 to build a threeshot lead in the RSM Classic as he goes for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Kisner was at 16-under 196, a record 54-hole score at the Sea Island course at St. Simons Island, Ga. Kevin Chappell overcame back-to-back bogeys early in his round for a 68. He also is going for his first PGA Tour win.

Cristie Kerr and Ha Na Jang shared a twostroke edge in the LPGA Tour Championsh­ip at Naples, Fla. Kerr shot a 67 to match Na Jang at 13 under at Tiburon Golf Club. Lydia Ko and Gerina Piller were tied for third at 11 under. Entering the final round, the 18-year-old Ko led the season-ending competitio­n for the world’s No. 1 ranking, the player-of-the-year award, the scoring title, the money title and the $1-million Race to the CME Globe bonus.

Peter Senior shot a final-round three-under 68 for a two-stroke victory at the Australian Masters at Melbourne. The 56-year-old Champions Tour regular became the oldest player to win the tournament. Senior finished with an eight-under 276 at Huntingdal­e. U.S. amateur Bryson DeChambeau (67) was tied for second with Australian­s John Senden (70) and Andrew Evans (71).

Jeff Gove shot his third straight three-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over three players in the Pebble Beach Invitation­al. Gove, who will play next season on the Web.com Tour, was at nine-under 207. Champions Tour players Kevin Sutherland and Duffy Waldorf were tied for second with the

Web.com Tour’s Travis Bertoni.

Byung Ho Park bolstered his MLB credential­s with a three-run homer in the fifth inning as South Korea routed the U.S., 8-0, to win the inaugural Premier12 baseball tournament at Tokyo. Team USA consisted of players not on 40-man MLB rosters.

Top-seeded UCLA defeated No. 4 USC, 6-3, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo semifinals at USC’s Uytengsu Aquatic Center. The Bruins will play California for the title at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at USC. The Trojans will play Pacific for third place at 3 p.m. Sunday. Cal beat No. 2 Pacific, 7-5, to reach the final.

Bob Foster, who was voted boxer of the year in 1968 after winning the light-heavyweigh­t title, died at Presbyteri­an hospital in Albuquerqu­e. He was 77. Foster was 56-8-1 with 46 knockouts and was named the third-greatest light-heavyweigh­t ever by Ring Magazine in 1994.

Javier Fernandez of Spain won the men’s gold at the Rostelecom Cup Grand Prix figure skating event at Moscow. Russia’s Adian Pitkeev took the silver and Ross Miner of the U.S. finished third.

Jason Brown, the reigning U.S. figure skating champion, withdrew from next week’s NHK Trophy in Japan after straining his back while training. Brown’s doctors expect him to recover before the 2016 U.S. Championsh­ips, which start Jan. 15.

Exaggerato­r, who was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, edged Sunny Ridge by a neck in the $1-million Delta Downs Jackpot race at Vinton, La.

Ronnie Berlack and Bryce Astle, two skiing prospects who were killed in an avalanche nearly a year ago, were named posthumous­ly to the U.S. Ski team at a ceremony at Copper Mountain, Colo.
