Royals give Gordon 4 years, $72 million

- Staff and wire reports — Dylan Hernandez

All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon signed a $72-million, four-year deal to remain with the Kansas City Royals, the long-downtrodden team that drafted him more than a decade ago, and that he helped to win the World Series this past season.

Gordon will make $12 million this season, $16 million next and $20 million each of the following two years. The deal includes a $23-million mutual option for 2020 with a $4-million buyout. If he is traded, the option would be voided and the $4 million would become an assignment bonus.

The Dodgers have offered Brandon Beachy another chance to revive his career in their uniform, as they resigned the once-promising righthander to a nonguaranteed one-year, $1.5-million contract.

Beachy is one of two pitchers the Dodgers have added this week to bolster their rotation depth. The other is Japanese right-hander Kenta Maeda, who is expected to be introduced Thursday at Dodger Stadium. Maeda signed what is believed to be an eightyear contract.

Beachy, 29, signed with the Dodgers last spring, when he was still in the process of recovering from his second reconstructive elbow operation. He started two major league games for the Dodgers and was 0-1 with a 7.88 earned-run average.
