- Associated press

Defending champion makes an eagle on the 18th hole at Kapalua to finish off an eight-under 65.

Patrick Reed had three eagle attempts Thursday and made the last one for an eight-under 65 and a one-shot lead over Jordan Spieth in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Playing partners Spieth and Reed, the defending champion at Kapalua, were part of a five-way tie for the lead on the par-five 18th on the Plantation Course when Reed drilled a three-wood onto the green and let the grain take it to 15 feet. He made the putt to cap off a 31 on the back nine.

Brandt Snedeker, J.B. Holmes and Danny Lee were at 67.
