Vonn ties Moser-Proell
Watched by Annemarie Moser-Proell, whose many World Cup records she has been breaking one by one, Lindsey Vonn joined the Austrian great as the world’s best female downhill skiers at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria. With her 36th victory in the discipline, the American matched the record set by Moser-Proell in January 1980.
The 62-year-old Austrian was among the first to congratulate Vonn, who leaned backward and spread both arms in celebration right after finishing a full second ahead of the competition in an unusual two-run format downhill.
“She is so kind,” said Vonn, who broke Moser-Proell’s overall record of 62 victories a year ago in Italy. “. . . It means a lot to me.”
Jordan Spieth capped off another strong performance with a 10-foot eagle putt for an eight-under-par 65, giving him a five-shot lead over Brooks Koepka going into the final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii. Only one other player, defending champion Patrick Reed, was within eight shots of Spieth.
Spieth was at 24-under 195, one shot shy of the 54-hole record at Kapalua that Ernie Els set in 2003 on his way to an eight-shot victory.
Brandt Snedeker (65) and Fabian Gomez (70) were nine shots back.
Carson Wentz threw for a touchdown and ran for two more scores in his first game since mid-October, sending North Dakota State to an unprecedented fifth straight FCS championship with a 37-10 victory over top-seeded Jacksonville State at Frisco, Texas.
After being crushed by Novak Djokovic, 6-1, 6-2, in the Qatar Open final in Doha, Rafael Nadal could only admire the Serb’s handiwork. “I played against a player who did everything perfect,” Nadal said.
Going into the final, Djokovic and Nadal were tied at 23 wins apiece in their career matchups, the most between any players in ATP history.
At 24-23, Djokovic holds a career edge against the Spaniard for the first time. Djokovic has won nine of their last 10 matches.
Victoria Azarenka capped a resurgent week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over fourth-seeded
Angelique Kerber in the Brisbane International final in Australia to claim her first tournament title since 2013.
