Storm prompts rescheduli­ng

A major winter storm forecast to drop heavy snowfall approached the Mid-Atlantic region Thursday, forcing the rescheduli­ng of several sporting events, including Friday’s NHL game in which the Ducks will face the Washington Capitals.

The Atlantic Coast Conference moved two basketball games involving No. 13 Virginia because of the storm.

The Ducks-Capitals game will start at 2 p.m. PST instead of the originally scheduled 4 p.m. The Capitals were considerin­g rescheduli­ng Sunday’s home game versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Syracuse at Virginia game scheduled for noon Saturday will instead be played at 7 p.m. Sunday. The Cavaliers’ visit to Wake Forest, set for Monday night, was pushed to Tuesday night.

In the nation’s capital, the George Washington women’s basketball game against visiting George Mason was reschedule­d for Friday at noon EST instead of Saturday. The George Mason’s men’s game against Duquesne in Fairfax, Va., was moved up from Saturday to Friday.

Major League Baseball owners held a lengthy executive session in Coral Gables, Fla., to discuss bargaining strategy over contentiou­s issues such as revenue sharing ahead of the start of negotiatio­ns for a new labor contract with players.

Commission­er Rob Manfred’s first anniversar­y as Bud Selig’s successor is Monday, and bargaining with the players’ associatio­n is expected to start during spring training. The current five-year deal expires Dec. 1.

On another topic, MLB is unsure when it will complete investigat­ions of New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman, Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig and Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes under the sport’s new domestic violence policy.

And Manfred said National League teams may be more receptive to the designated hitter than in the past. It has been used in the AL since 1973.

Teenager Polina Edmunds holds a large lead at the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips in St. Paul, Minn., after former winners Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold made major mistakes in their short programs.

The 17-year-old Edmunds, a 2014 Olympian, skated cleanly to score 70.19 points as she seeks her first national title. Gold is second with 62.50 points after she did only one rotation on a planned triple lutz and nearly crashed into the wall on an attempted triple-triple combinatio­n, settling for a double toe loop on the second jump.

Tyler Pierce, also 17, is third with 62.45 points. Wagner, a three-time U.S. champion, is fourth with 62.41 after falling on her triple-triple combinatio­n.

Former NBA player Tate George was sentenced in a New Jersey federal court to nine years in prison for running a real estate Ponzi scheme.
