U. S. women win world hockey title in OT

Alex Carpenter jabbed home a bouncing puck 12 minutes and 30 seconds into overtime to give the U. S. women’s hockey team a 1- 0 victory over Canada in the gold medal game of the women’s world championsh­ips at Kamloops, Canada. Team USA has won three straight world titles and six of the last seven.

Carpenter, daughter of former NHL standout Bobby Carpenter, was standing near the right post and was in position to pounce on a puck that had bounced en route to the net and had glanced off the leg of stellar Canadian goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer. “It’s pretty unbelievab­le,” Carpenter said on the NHL Network telecast. “I was just in the right place at the right time.”

The U. S. and Canadian women have met in the world championsh­ip f inale 17 times. Alex Rigsby made 32 saves in net for the U. S.

The NHL suspended Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri for four games without pay for cross- checking Detroit’s Luke Glendening in the back of the head. The discipline will cost Kadri $ 200,000.

Olympic gold in golf this summer will be good for major exemptions. The men’s winner will be assured of a spot in the Masters, U. S. Open, British Open and PGA Championsh­ip in 2017.
