Norman signs with Redskins for five years

The Washington Redskins signed cornerback Josh Norman on Friday, two days after the Carolina Panthers cut him loose.

Norman, one of the NFL’s top corners, became a free agent Wednesday after the Panthers rescinded the franchise tag, which would have paid him $13.9 million next season. The 28-year-old was holding out for a long-term contract. The Washington Post reported that the deal is for five years and is worth $75 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

NBA calls foul late

The NBA said that Houston’s James Harden should have been given an offensive foul for pushing Golden State’s Andre Iguodala before his winning shot Thursday night in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series.

The Rockets trailed by a point when Harden pushed Iguodala before stepping back for the shot with 2.7 seconds left that gave Houston a 97-96 win and cut the Rockets’ series deficit to 2-1.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry said that he would be very surprised if his sprained right ankle kept him out in Game 4 of the series on Sunday.

Portland guard C.J. McCollum won the NBA’s most improved player award in his first season as a starter for the Trail Blazers.

Rain washed out qualifying at Richmond Internatio­nal Raceway in Virginia, giving Kevin Harvick the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race based on being the fastest in an abbreviate­d morning practice session. Harvick won the pole with a speed of 129.069 mph, edging Joey Logano for the top spot.

Tony Stewart’s peers will pay the $35,000 fine NASCAR levied against the three-time champion for criticizin­g the series for not policing how many lug nuts teams are applying during tire changes. The decision to use fewer lug nuts for faster pit stops has led to a rash of loose wheels in the past two races.

Brendan Steele completed an eight-under 64 in the morning and shot a 70 in the second round to take a three-stroke lead in the Texas Open at San Antonio. The winner five years ago at TPC San Antonio for his lone tour title, Steele had a 10-under 134 total. Play was suspended because of darkness with 13 players left on the course. Scott Langley, Stuart Appleby and Charley Hoffman were tied for second. Appleby rallied after four-putting from seven feet for a triple bogey on his opening hole. Phil Mickelson missed the cut, shooting 77-71.

Haru Nomura shot a two-under 70 at Lake Merced to take a threestrok­e, second-round lead in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic at Daly City, Calif. The 23-year-old player had a nine-under 135 total.

Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman teamed to shoot an 11under 60 in better-ball play to take the first-round lead in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Ridgedale, Mo.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat 12th-seeded Fabio Fognini, 6-2, 7-6 (1), to advance to the semifinals of the Barcelona Open. Nadal next plays 10th-seeded Philipp Kohlschrei­ber in the Spaniard’s first semifinal at Barcelona since 2013. Second-seeded Kei Nishikori will face Benoit Paire.

Angelique Kerber will face Petra Kvitova in the Porsche Grand Prix semifinals at Stuttgart, Germany, and top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska will play qualifier Laura Siegemund.

North Carolina’s Justin Jackson and Kennedy Meeks are declaring for the NBA draft but aren’t hiring agents, so the players have the option to return to college.

After Conor McGregor was a no-show at a news conference promoting the UFC 200 card, UFC President Dana White said he would not fight Nate Diaz in a rematch on the July 9 card in Las Vegas. McGregor tweeted that he respected that other fighters traveled to the news conference but that not all “made the company [$]400 million the last 8 months.”
