The Business section turns the spotlight on equity crowdfundi­ng, which under new rules that take effect Monday allow start-ups to raise money by selling stock to small investors through Kickstarte­r-like campaigns. A 2012 federal law greenlight­ed the program, which is attracting local participan­ts in need of cash.

TV networks hold ‘upfront’

The major television networks will unveil their fall schedules for advertiser­s starting Monday in New York. The annual “Upfront Week” ritual seeks to get advertiser­s excited enough to open their wallets and buy commercial time in advance of the season. Fox, NBC and Telemundo have their events on Monday, followed by Univision, ESPN, ABC, CBS, Turner and the CW.

Google I/O conference

Google’s annual I/O developers conference will take place Tuesday through Thursday in Mountain View, Calif. The online rumor mill is suggesting several new developmen­ts that could be announced, including a Google competitor to Amazon’s Echo, the voice-activated home automation device, and integratio­n of the Google Play apps library into Chrome’s operating system.

Medication disposal plan

The L.A. County Board of Supervisor­s will consider a proposal on Tuesday to set up a network of sites where old medication could be dropped off for disposal. Drug manufactur­ers have mounted a vigorous campaign against the program, which they would fund. Proponents say the plan would keep chemicals out of the water supply. The companies say it would be ineffectiv­e.

Gap Inc. to post earnings

Gap Inc. will report f irst-quarter earnings on Thursday. Last week, the San Franciscob­ased retailer reported lower-than-expected sales, issued a firstquart­er prof it warning and announced that it is mulling over options for its business outside North America. The company, which operates the Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy chains, said April same-story sales fell 7%.
