Johnson (64) leads Memorial

Dustin Johnson set the pace early with 10 birdies on his way to an eight-under 64 at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. Jason Day curbed his aggressive nature to try to catch him.

Johnson opened with three birdies, made three straight birdies to close out the back nine, added four in a row on the back and wound up with his best score in his nine years at Muirfield Village. He had a one-shot lead over Brendan Steele.

Day wound up two shots behind. Jordan Spieth’s putter saved him in a scrappy round of 70. Rory McIlroy, playing with Spieth, shot 71.

Muhammad Ali is hospitaliz­ed in the Phoenix area with what two people familiar with his condition say might be more serious problems than his previous hospital stays.

The people told the AP on Thursday that Ali, 74, is fighting respirator­y issues that are complicate­d by the Parkinson’s that he was diagnosed with in the 1980s.

Ronda Rousey might not return to the octagon until 2017 after undergoing minor knee surgery, UFC President Dana White said.

White said the former UFC bantamweig­ht champion had surgery Wednesday to clean out her knee. He described the surgery as “nothing serious,” but acknowledg­ed that it could postpone Rousey’s longawaite­d return to fighting until next year.

UCLA has hired Josh Lewin as the school’s playby-play announcer for football and men’s basketball to replace Bill Roth, who has departed after a year on the job. Lewin handles radio play-by-play duties for the New York Mets and will start his 12th season as the voice of the San Diego Chargers this fall.

Ivana Jakubcova has transferre­d to USC for the upcoming basketball season, giving the Trojans their tallest player in 29 years. The 6-foot-6 center will have one season of eligibilit­y left after transferri­ng from Kentucky.

Jakubcova will be the tallest Trojans player since Monica Lamb, who also stood 6-6, in 1987.
