Play the peacock with flair
These boldly designed shirts will make the wearer stand out this summer
Menswear is heating up with a profusion of print shirts this summer, and, best of all, there are a variety of styles to meet every sartorial desire and creative expression, including vivid florals, graphic geometrics, hand-drawn designs and artsy photo effects.
Here’s the thing: These shirt cuts are trimmer for a clean profile especially when worn casually untucked.
Short sleeves instantly spell summer, and even the cabana shirt gets a revival with the slimmer treatment.
Long-sleeved options are perfect for dressier occasions and include pajama-inspired styles for the relentlessly on-trend.
“I think men like print shirts because of the response they get wearing them,” says Jasmin Larian, 27, co-creator of the Los Angeles-based Cult Guy shirt line and founder of women’s accessories label Cult Gaia. “They’re conversation starters and a kind of subtle peacocking without being so overt.”
She and her 21-year-old brother, Cameron, started their shirt line in February, drawing on her extensive collection of vintage fabrics, and sister and brother Larian have a pop-up store until the end of June at Platform, the new lifestyle center in Culver City.
“Every time a guy wears a really cool printed shirt, it’s like, ‘Oh, wait…’ It makes you look,” Larian says. “Cameron and I always say, ‘If it doesn’t make you look twice, then it’s not a good print.’ ”
So, guys, pick your print for any summer pastime and revel in the chance to be the center of attention.
To get you started, we’ve paired some of our favorite print shirts with suggested warm-weather destination points, but it’s best to make the style your own.
As Larian says, “The only way for a guy to wear one is to own it.”
