Bring employers, job-seekers together as a recruiter

- — CareerBuilder

Recruiters connect business clients with the right candidates for vacant positions. These professionals form points of contact between businesses and potential employees, conducting preliminary interviews and assessing resumes to determine the best fit for potential hires and businesses. While recruiters work for business clients, they also act as advocates for job seekers, coaching them on interview techniques and advising them of new job opportunities as positions arise. Recruiters often specialize in matching job seekers with vacancies in a specific location, industry, job role, or job level.

Responsibilities. What does a recruiter do? As a recruiter, you’ll help businesses fill vacant positions with qualified, motivated, and personable candidates. While responsibilities vary, a recruiter job description typically features the following tasks: • Meet with business clients. • Develop and regularly update job descriptions and requirements. • Post job advertisements to employment websites, newspapers, newsgroups, and colleges. • Evaluate response rates to job advertisements and develop strategies to improve responses. • Source and seek job candidates for open positions through social media, email applications, and other forms. • Assess job applications, noting

candidates’ education, experience, skills, talents, and matches with employers’ business requirements. • Interview candidates with potential to fill vacant positions and analyze their responses. • Verify the references of solid job candidates and conduct background checks to determine suitability. • Refer the best job candidates to hiring managers. • Build a database of solid job candidates who may be appropriate for future vacancies with employers. • Design and implement recruiting strategies. • Monitor job market and compensation practices.

Work environment: Most recruiters work for employment agencies. Some recruiters also work for employment brokers who represent multiple recruitment agencies.

Other recruiters, known as internal recruiters or corporate recruiters, work directly for the company seeking to expand its workforce. Internal recruiters typically work for large firms across a range of industries. In any case, recruiters typically work in their employers’ offices, where job candidates can visit them in person. As the world adopts more mobile technologies, an increasing number of recruiters telecommute, working from their home office some or all the time.
