When beach volleyball is played in a non-seaside Olympic city—such as London or Beijing—the perfect sand (sifted, not too coarse, free of stones and dangerous particles and not too fine as to cause dust to stick to the skin) is trucked in to construct the court. But in Rio, players will partake of the local sands—and take in the picturesqu­e surroundin­gs—of Copacabana Beach.
