ECONOMIC UNREST
In recent months Zimbabwe has seen almost weekly demonstrations, as citizens protest policies by the government of President Robert Mugabe. Some protests have ended in clashes, and that happened again as officers fired tear gas and water cannon in the capital, Harare, to disperse about 100 people rallying against the central bank’s plans to reintroduce local banknotes. Protesters fear the plan to ease the dollar shortage could lead to inf lation, as happened in 2008 when inf lation hit 500 billion percent.
