A scapegoat for 0-2 Bills

-

Rex Ryan fires offensive coordinator Greg Roman to try to give his sputtering attack a kick-start.

Rex Ryan is holding himself answerable for the Buffalo Bills’ slow start. At the same time, he’s made a significant change to his coaching staff by firing offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman was let go Friday in a bid to kick start the Bills’ sputtering Tyrod Taylor-led attack.

The team announced the move in an email released a day after Buffalo fell to 0-2 with a 37-31 loss to the New York Jets. Running backs coach Anthony Lynn will take over as coordinator. Lynn also serves as an assistant head coach and has spent the past eight years working under Ryan.

Ryan wouldn’t say what specific changes he hopes to see from the offense. But he indicated getting the ball to the Bills’ top playmakers would be a priority.

The New England Patriots listed tight end Rob Gronkowski as questionable for Sunday’s game against Miami, one week after he missed the season opener with a hamstring injury . . . . Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Ivory will miss his second straight game Sunday while recovering from a “general medical issue.” Coach Gus Bradley ruled Ivory out Friday, saying T.J. Yeldon will start at San Diego and Denard Robinson will get some carries. Bradley also ruled out cornerback Prince Amukamara (hamstring).

In Gee Chun shot a five-under 66 to take a twostroke lead in the Evian Championship at EvianLes-Bains, France, keeping the South Korean player on course for her second major title.

The 22-year-old Chun, the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open champion, had six birdies and a bogey in rainy and overcast conditions to reach 13-under 129 on the picturesque resort overlooking Lake Geneva. South Korea’s Sung Hyun Park, tied for the first-round lead with Chun after a 63, shot 68 to match China’s Shanshan Feng (68) at 11 under. So Yeon Ryu, also from South Korea, was 10 under after a 66.

Paul Broadhurst shot a six-under 66 at Pebble Beach to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Nature Valley First Tee Open. Gene Sauers, Craig Parry, Jay Don Blake, Kevin Sutherland and Tom Pernice Jr. were at four under. Sauers, Parry and Blake shot 68 at Pebble Beach, and Sutherland and Pernice shot 67 at Poppy Hills. Bernhard Langer opened with a 70 at Poppy Hills.

England’s Chris Paisley topped the Italian Open leaderboard at 10 under after 13 holes when play was suspended for the day at Monza because of thunderstorms. Masters champion Danny Willett of England was a stroke back, also with five holes left in the second round.

Qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup opener at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., was rained out. The lineup for Sunday’s race will be based on the playoff seeding, meaning Kyle Busch will be on the pole and Brad Keselowski will start second. Denny Hamlin will start third, followed by Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards.

After the weather at Joliet cleared, Busch overcame a race-record 11 cautions for his 46th career NASCAR Truck Series victory Friday night, dashing the hopes of full-time drivers needing wins to claim a spot in the series’ debut Chase for the Championship. Daniel Hemric was second.
