Patriots QB Brissett is injured

-

The New England Patriots could be looking for yet another quarterback after third-stringer Jacoby Brissett injured his right thumb in Thursday night’s victory over the Houston Texans. Brissett was seen on the sidelines with the training staff having the thumb examined after Texans defensive lineman Vince Wilfork landed on him in the third quarter of New England’s 27-0 win. The team now has nine days before playing Buffalo on Oct. 2 to bring in a free agent if one is needed.

Adrian Peterson was placed on injured reserve Friday by the Minnesota Vikings, a sign that his time with the team could be over following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. NFL teams can pull one player off injured reserve per season, but the likelihood of his returning this year is slim. Also Friday, Vikings left tackle Matt Kalil had surgery to repair a labrum tear in his right hip and was placed on injured reserve.

Dustin Johnson powered his way down the fairways and occasionally out of the brutal rough at East Lake for a three-under 67, giving him a one-shot lead over Kevin Chappell and moving him one round closer to the $10-million FedEx Cup prize. Johnson was at seven-under 203. Chappell shot a 68 and will be in the final group of a playoff event for the second time this year.

Kevin Kisner (70) and Hideki Matsuyama (71) were four shots behind at Atlanta, while Rory McIlroy overcame another rough start on the front nine to post a 70. He was in the group five shots behind. Jason Day, the world’s No. 1 player, withdrew in the middle of a round at the second straight event, citing nagging back issues.

Scott McCarron birdied five of the first six holes and finished with an eight-under 62 to take the firstround lead in the Champion’s Tour’s Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship in Victoria, Canada.
