Angels’ Calhoun to have surgery
Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun will undergo core muscle surgery Tuesday in Pennsylvania, the team announced.
General Manager Billy Eppler said the surgery was meant to correct an ailment that bothered Calhoun for much of the season.
The required recovery time is estimated to be six to eight weeks, after which Calhoun can prepare for the season as normal.
Calhoun, who turns 29 on Friday, batted .271 with a .786 OPS in 157 games. It was his best full season on offense; he won a Gold Glove in 2015.
He qualified for arbitration by one day last year and received $3.4 million, more than doubling his previous earnings.
Calhoun could sign a long-term contract with the team to bypass the next three years of arbitration, but the Angels did not discuss that matter with him last off-season.
Braves hire Snitker as manager
Brian Snitker was hired by the Atlanta Braves as manager.
The Braves finished last in the National League East but won 20 of their last 30 games under Snitker, who became interim manager May 17 after Fredi Gonzalez was fired.
Snitker, who turns 61 next week, had a 59-65 record.
He was Atlanta’s third base coach from 2006 to 2013 but spent most of his four decades with the organization as a minor league manager.
