Hamilton stays alive in F1 title chase

Lewis Hamilton got the victory he needed to keep his Formula One championsh­ip hopes alive, winning the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, for the fourth time in five years. Hamilton cut Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg's points lead to 26 with three races to go. Rosberg finished second.

Alexis Pinturault of France dominated the men’s World Cup giant slalom season opener at Soelden, Austria. Marcel Hirscher of Austria, defending champion in the discipline and in the overall World Cup points race, finished second. Olympic and world giant slalom champion Ted Ligety of the U.S. was fifth.

Americans Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani won the ice dance title, and teammates Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished second at Skate America in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Japan’s Shoma Uno claimed the men’s championsh­ip, ahead of Americans Jason Brown and Adam Rippon.

Carli Lloyd scored twice and the U.S. women’s national soccer team defeated Switzerlan­d, 5-1, in an exhibition at Minneapoli­s.

In tennis, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina ended a 33month title drought, winning the Stockholm Open with a 7-5 6-1 victory over American Jack Sock .... Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain came back to beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow . . . . Richard Gasquet of France beat unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzma­n, 7-6 (4), 6-1, to win the European Open at Antwerp, Belgium . . . . Top-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany struggled past Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, and Simona Halep of Romania beat American Madison Keys, 6-2, 6-4, on opening day of the WTA Finals in Singapore.

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors exercised the third-year contract option on Kevon Looney, a forward from UCLA who appeared in five games last season, averaging 1.8 points . . . . Toronto Raptors forward Jared Sullinger will have surgery Monday to insert a screw in his left foot.

American Gal, ridden by Rafael Bejarano and trained by Bob Baffert, won the $70,000 Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.
