Gurley says Rams must do better

The running back, who has not produced much, says the team has to get it together.

LONDON — If the Rams have a defining play this season, it’s Catch-22.

Running back Todd Gurley needs the passing game to get going.

Unless Gurley gets on track, the passing game is going to suffer.

As it stands, nothing is reliably working. Gurley, last season’s offensive rookie of the year, had another disappointing day on the ground, with 57 yards in 15 carries in the Rams’ 17-10 loss to the New York Giants. He had six catches for 35 yards, but 20 of those came on one play.

Win or lose, Gurley typically reveals little after games. His answers tend to be short and abrupt. He opened up a bit more Sunday, though, sounding exasperated after a third loss in a row.

“We’ve got to play better, man,” he said. “It’s football, we’ve been doing this our whole life. Can’t be shooting ourselves in the foot.”

He said every offensive player needs to look in the mirror and determine whether that individual is helping or hurting the team.

“Some games I’m hurting myself, some games I feel I’m doing as much as I can,” he said. “It’s definitely not an effort thing. Everybody, we love this game and we want to win. But you’ve got to do the little things right, the simple things.

“Football is the only sport where you practice every day and play one game a week. When the game comes it should be second nature.”

Gurley had a four-game stretch last season in which he rushed for 146, 159, 128 and 133 yards. In the 15 games since, he has rushed for 100 yards once, and that was last December.

“We’ve got to move on from this and stay together,” he said. “When times get rough, everybody goes to pointing fingers in the locker room, media, whatever it is. … We’ve just got to get it together.”
