Thomas sets tour record

- Staff and wire reports

Challenged only by the record book, Justin Thomas won the Sony Open in Honolulu on Sunday with the lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history.

Thomas capped off a week at Waialae that began with a 59 and ended with his second straight title. He shot a five-under 65 to set the record at 253. Tommy Armour III shot 254 at the 2003 Texas Open.

Thomas began the final round with a seven-shot lead, and no one got closer than five. He finished seven ahead of Justin Rose and became the first player since Ernie Els in 2003 to win both Hawaii events. The 23-year-old from Kentucky also won for the third time in his last five tournaments worldwide.

Graeme Storm of England defeated Rory McIlroy on the third playoff hole to win the SA Open at Johannesburg, South Africa, and afterward the Northern Irishman said he will have an MRI exam on his sore back Monday to make sure he is fit enough to play next week without further damage.

McIlroy, ranked No. 2, shot a three-under 68 to erase a three-shot deficit and force the playoff. After Storm tapped in for a par on the third extra hole, McIlroy slid his par putt wide from seven feet on their fourth visit to the 18th hole. Storm, ranked 251st, earned his second European Tour title.

Woody Austin closed with a six-under 66 to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the Diamond Resorts Invitational, a modified Stableford scoring system event in Orlando, Fla., featuring Tour Champions and LPGA players and celebrities. Lexi Thompson finished 11th, tops among LPGA players, and former pitcher Mark Mulder took the celebrity title.

Toto Gana of Chile won the Latin America Amateur in Panama and earned a spot in the Masters.
