Shanahan may be 49ers’ next coach
The search for a new San Francisco 49ers coach has narrowed in on Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan after the only other candidate remaining pulled out of consideration.
Seattle offensive line coach Tom Cable’s agent, Doug Hendickson, tweeted Tuesday that Cable had reaffirmed his commitment to the Seahawks. That followed New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels pulling out on Monday and left Shanahan as the only remaining candidate.
The 49ers can’t hire Shanahan until the Falcons’ season ends. Atlanta hosts Green Bay in the NFC championship game on Sunday.
Denver Broncos Coach Vance Joseph promoted secondary coach Joe Woods to defensive coordinator, replacing Wade Phillips, who left for the Rams. Woods, 46, was in charge of the Broncos’ secondary, which led the league in pass defense each of the last two seasons.
Taking over Woods’ old job is Marcus Robertson, who spent the last three seasons working with the Oakland Raiders’ defensive backs.
Stuck in last place in the Eastern Conference, the New York Islanders fired Coach Jack Capuano, ending one of the longest tenures in the NHL.
General Manager Garth Snow named assistant GM/ coach Doug Weight as Capuano’s interim replacement. The Islanders are 17-17-8 and their 42 points are the fewest in the East. The Islanders went 227-194-64 in seven seasons under Capuano and made three playoff appearances.
