Teammate’s drug use costs Bolt gold medal

-

Usain Bolt has lost one of his nine Olympic gold medals because of a doping case involving Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter.

The IOC said Wednesday that Carter tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant, in reanalysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Olympic rules state that the entire relay team can be disqualified and stripped of medals if one runner fails a doping test.

Carter and Bolt were teammates on the winning 400-meter relay team, which set a world record of 37.10 seconds. Carter ran the opening leg, and Bolt took the baton third in a team that also included Michael Frater and Asafa Powell.

Right-hander Greg Holland agreed to a $7-million, one-year contract with the Colorado Rockies, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press. Holland can make an additional $7 million in performance bonuses. The deal includes an option for 2018 that could become guaranteed.

Holland was the Royals’ closer through most of 2014 and 2015, when they made consecutive trips to the World Series. He injured his right elbow in late 2015 and missed all of last season while recuperating from Tommy John surgery. Prior to his injury, the 31-year-old established himself as one of the most dominant closers in the game, posting a 1.21 ERA in 2013 and a 1.44 ERA in 2014.

All-Star left-hander Drew Pomeranz and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a $4.45-million, one-year contract, avoiding a salary arbitration hearing next month. The 28-year-old was 11-12 with a 3.32 ERA in a career-high 30 starts and one relief appearance last year. He was acquired by the Red Sox from San Diego on July 14.

Campus police are investigating the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl at a University of Kansas dorm housing the men’s basketball team, authorities said. No charges have been filed and police have not publicly identified any suspects. Five members of the nation’s No. 2-ranked team are listed as witnesses on the police report. A Kansas athletics administrator and two 19-year-old women not listed as witnesses were also questioned, the report shows.

The alleged assault and other related crimes occurred sometime between 10 p.m. on Dec. 17 and 5 a.m. on Dec. 18 at McCarthy Hall, which houses team members and other students, police said.

Jim Marchiony, associate athletic director for external relations, declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
