A purple heart awarded, 72 years later
Lee Anderson, a former Marine wounded in the battle of Iwo Jima during the waning months of World War II, is awarded the purple heart at a ceremony Thursday in Canoga Park. The award was presented as a surprise while the 91-year-old veteran was having his usual breakfast at Henri’s Restaurant. He was joined by his three sons, above from left, Adam, Jim and Todd. Anderson had never applied for the award, but his family did so after looking into his military records.
