Oakley banned from Garden indefinitely
Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan banned Charles Oakley from the arena, though he said he was open to reconciling with the former Knicks forward.
In an interview with ESPN Radio’s Michael Kay, Dolan also confirmed a report that he had fired the Garden’s security chief, two nights after Oakley was forcefully removed from his seat and arrested at a Knicks game. Dolan said the firing of the security head stemmed from more than just the handling of the incident.
Dolan also said he won’t fire Phil Jackson or stand in the way if the Knicks president wants to trade Carmelo Anthony.
Candace Parker has signed a multiyear extension with the Sparks, the team announced. The team did not release terms of the deal.
Parker, the No. 1 pick of the 2008 WNBA draft, has played all of her nine-year career with the Sparks. The 6-foot-4 forward averages 17.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Parker was named the WNBA most valuable player in 2008 and 2013 and is a three-time All-Star.
The NBA suspended Phoenix Suns center Alex Len for one game without pay for leaving the bench during an on-court altercation Wednesday against the Grizzlies in Memphis. The NBA also fined three players $15,000 each for their roles in the altercation — Phoenix guard Tyler Ulis and forward Marquese Chriss and Memphis guard Troy Daniels.

The families of the two men who were with Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez when his boat crashed into a Miami Beach jetty — killing all three — are suing the AllStar’s estate for $2 million apiece.

Macias said Rivero’s claim was filed Friday, and Macias’ will be filed Monday. The attorney representing Fernandez's family said a settlement is “highly unlikely.”

A crowd stampeded at a soccer stadium in Angola, leaving at least 17 people dead and dozens injured. The accident happened in the northwestern town of Uige, when hundreds of people rushed at one of the stadium gates, causing some to fall and be trampled underfoot, according to Angolan and Portuguese media.
Tony Stewart has returned to sprint car racing, though his first race back was frustrating. Stewart finished 17th in the 26-car main event late Thursday at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla., and he ended the night arguing with a fellow driver and complaining with officials. Stewart was driving a sprint car for the first time since he accidentally struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. in 2014.
Russian runner Maria Savinova was stripped of her 2012 Olympic gold medal for doping, putting South Africa’s Caster Semenya in line to become a two-time champion. Savinova, who won the 800-meter title at the London Games ahead of Semenya, was also banned for four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Mike Ilitch, founder of the Little Caesars Pizza empire and owner of the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers, has died. He was 87.
