Green, who guided Phillies to title, dies

Dallas Green, the tough-talking manager who guided the Philadelph­ia Phillies to their first World Series championsh­ip, died Wednesday. He was 82.

The Phillies said Green died at a hospital in Philadelph­ia. Green spent 62 years in baseball as a player, manager, general manager, team president and other roles.

Pete Hamilton, who won the Daytona 500 in 1970 and 1971, died Wednesday. He was 74.

Dedrick Basile scored 14 points, including the clinching free throws with five seconds left, and Cal State Bakersfiel­d became the first No. 8 seed to advance to the NIT semifinals, defeating Texas Arlington, 80-76, in Arlington, Texas. The Roadrunner­s (25-9) will play Georgia Tech in New York on Tuesday . ... The Cal Baptist women’s team was eliminated in the Division II semifinals, losing to Virginia Union, 86-81, in Columbus, Ohio. Cal Baptist, located in Riverside, finished the season 35-3.

The Philadelph­ia 76ers said center Joel Embiid would undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Robin Lopez of the Chicago Bulls and Serge Ibaka of the Toronto Raptors were suspended for a game for their fight on Tuesday.
