Woods out of Masters again
Injuries will keep him out of Augusta on the 20th anniversary of his record-setting win.
Tiger Woods won’t play in the Masters for the third time in the last four years because he says he is not tournament ready.
Woods announced Friday night on his website that he did everything possible to try to play. He said his back rehabilitation simply didn’t allow him enough time.
Woods withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic in early February after shooting a 77, complaining of back spasms, and hasn’t played since.
This is the 20th anniversary of Woods winning his first Masters by a record 12 shots.
The f irst major
Norway’s Suzann Pettersen finished her wind-delayed first round at Rancho Mirage with a four-underpar 68 and added a secondround 69 Friday at the ANA Inspiration, taking a oneshot lead over six players after two shortened days at the LPGA Tour’s first major of the year.
After an early end to Thursday’s play and a late start Friday for cleanup from the windstorm, play was halted by darkness with 56 players still on the course. They will complete their second round Saturday morning.
Rookie Nelly Korda shot a pair of 69s to climb onto the leaderboard, sitting one shot behind Pettersen in her first major as a professional. The 18-year-old Korda’s big sister, 24-year-old Jessica, is in the hunt at three under.
Michelle Wie, who finished eight holes in her second round, is in the group at six under.
Kang leads by six
South Korea’s Sung Kang shot a nine-under 63 to take a six-shot lead in a record-breaking second round at the Houston Open. After shooting a 65 on Thursday, Kang was at 16under 128, breaking by one stroke the 36-hole tournament record of 129, set by Blaine McCallister in 1993 and Curtis Strange in 1980.
Kang, who entered the week ranked No. 202 in the world, bested the tournament course record at the Golf Club of Houston by three strokes, topping Johnson Wagner’s 132 in 2008.
Hudson Swafford and Russell Henley were at 10 under after both shooting 67. First-round leader Rickie Fowler was another shot back after a 71.
Champions
Joe Durant shot a sixunder 66 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic at Biloxi, Miss.
Durant made four birdies on the back nine in warm and sunny conditions to finish just ahead of defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, Scott Hoch, Lee Janzen and Jay Haas.
