Events may return to N.C.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is ready to start holding events again in North Carolina after the state rolled back a law that limited protection­s for LGBT people. In a statement, the league said its Council of Presidents has voted to again consider North Carolina sites to host events.

Arkansas lawmakers sent the governor a measure exempting college sporting events from a new state law that greatly expands where concealed handguns are allowed. Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he plans to sign the bill Monday after it was approved by the state Senate on a 23-7 vote. The move comes a little over a week after the Republican governor approved legislatio­n that allows someone with a concealed handgun license to carry at colleges, government buildings and some bars if they get the required training.

With less than a year to go until the Olympics, figure skating star Evgenia Medvedeva looked unbeatable at the World Championsh­ips in Helsinki, winning a second straight world title with a world record of 233.41 points, 15 points ahead of her closest rival. The 17-year-old Russian is unbeaten since November 2015. Canadian skaters Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman were second and third. U.S. champion Karen Chen led the American team in fourth, and last year’s silver medalist Ashley Wagner was seventh.

Roger Federer’s season of resurgence took another thrilling turn Friday night when he won a seesaw semifinal against Nick Kyrgios at the Miami Open, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5). Federer will face Rafael Nadal in the final Sunday. Nadal advanced by beating Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-5

USC guard Shaqquan Aaron has declared for the NBA draft, a team spokesman said, but Aaron has not hired an agent, meaning he will retain the option to return to the team. Aaron, a 6-foot-7 sophomore transfer from Louisville, started 20 games this season and averaged 7.6 points.

Caltech’s SCIAC baseball losing streak is no more. Late-game heroics from freshman Alex Corado and sound pitching from sophomore Jonah Krop earned the Beavers their first conference victory since 1988, 4-3 over Pomona-Pitzer.
