Police fatally shot a man armed with a knife during a domestic violence incident Saturday night in Newport Beach, officials said.

According to a Newport Beach police statement, officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 9 p.m. in the 200 block of 61st Street.

An officer arrived and confronted the suspect on the sidewalk. The statement said the officer ordered the man to drop his knife. He did so, but picked it up “seconds later” and “exhibited threatening actions toward the officer,” who then shot him.

The man was treated by fire department personnel, then taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died later Saturday. His name is being withheld pending identification.

The woman involved in the domestic violence was taken to a hospital, the statement said.
