Bryan wins Heritage for first PGA Tour title

Wesley Bryan rallied to win the RBC Heritage in his home state for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a four-under-par 67 on Sunday for a onestroke victory over Luke Donald at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Bryan, who played college golf at South Carolina and was born in Columbia, the state capital, was four shots behind entering the day. He moved into contention with four consecutiv­e birdies on the front nine and took the lead with a birdie on the 15th hole on his way to finishing at 13-under 271.

Donald shot 68 in his latest close call at Harbour Town Golf Links — it was his fifth second-place finish there since 2009.

Ollie Schniederj­ans, Patrick Cantlay and William McGirt tied for third, two strokes behind Bryan. Schniederj­ans shot 68, Cantlay 67 and McGirt 69.

Stephen Ames won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic for his first PGA Tour Champions victory, easily holding off Bernhard Langer by four strokes at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga.

The 52-year-old Ames, a naturalize­d Canadian citizen from Trinidad and Tobago, closed with a six-under 66 for his first tournament victory since he won the 2009 Children’s Miracle Network Classic, the last of his four PGA Tour titles. He is the third Canadian to win on the 50-and-over tour and the 11th player to win on the PGA Tour Champions, PGA Tour and Web.com Tour.

Fred Funk (66), David Frost (68) and Brandt Jobe (70) tied for third at 10 under. 36-year-old Francesca Schiavone won a WTA tournament in Bogota, Colombia. Schiavone played in WTA events in her native Italy before Vondrousov­a was born in June 1999.

Tenth-seeded David Goffin defeated Belgian countryman Steve Darcis 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters as the first big tournament of the clay-court season got underway. Frenchman Gilles Simon, a former semifinali­st in Monaco, beat Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-2, 6-2 to set up a second-round match with No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic.

Sebastian Vettel of Germany won the Bahrain Grand Prix to move to the top of the Formula One standings for an emboldened Ferrari team. A couple of hours after Vettel had held off his Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton for his second victory in three races, Ferrari's chairman spoke with newfound confidence.

“We are now completely confident that our victory in Melbourne wasn’t just a one-off and that we will be at the forefront of this world championsh­ip until the last [race],” Sergio Marchionne said.

Vettel is chasing his fifth F1 title and is seven points ahead of three-time champion Hamilton in the drivers’ standings, while Ferrari is three points in front of Mercedes in the constructo­rs’ race.

Ferrari won the last of its 15 drivers’ titles in 2007, when Kimi Raikkonen topped the standings, and the last of its 16 constructo­rs’ titles a year later. Its drivers did not even win a race last year.

Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike scored 19 points and Angel McCoughtry scored 20 as Dynamo Kursk of Russia defeated Turkey’s Fenerbahce 77-63 to win the EuroLeague women’s championsh­ip at Ekaterinbu­rg, Russia. It was the first EuroLeague title for Dynamo Kursk, which finished 18-0.

“I'm incredibly proud of my team’s efforts,” said Ogwumike, who helped the Sparks win the WNBA title and was named that league’s player of the year last season. “Another championsh­ip to celebrate never hurts.”

Ander Herrera scored one goal and set up the other as Manchester United defeated visiting Chelsea 2-0 to tighten the English Premier League title race.

United handed the EPL leaders their fifth league loss of the season, and it left them only four points ahead of Tottenham with six games left.

Police in Panama said national team soccer player Amilcar Henriquez was shot to death Saturday as he left his home.

The press chief for Panama’s National Police said the killing occurred in the country’s Colon province. Authoritie­s said a gunman shot the 33year-old midfielder several times, and he died at a nearby hospital.. Two other people were wounded.

Henriquez played in the last 20 minutes of Panama’s 1-1 tie with the United States last month in a qualifier for the 2018 World Cup and has appeared 75 times for his country.
