Celebrating 70 years of competition and friendship
A welcome from the 2017 NOSA Commodore
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the 70th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race and for being part of our illustrious history. The world has seen a lot of changes in the last seven decades and the advances in boat design and construction, sails and navigation technology have been remarkable. But we are continuing this tradition, offering our sailors a chance to compete against the elements and fellow competitors for the complete Ensenada experience. 2016 was a historic year when fabulous winds and adept sailing skills combined for a multi-record breaking race followed by joyous celebrations at our Ensenada home, the Hotel Coral and Marina. One of the wondrous things about sailboat races is that there is something unique and special to each one. We are grateful for the sailors joining us this year, some for their 20th, 30th or 40th race or more, and those racing for the first time. We at NOSA wish you a great race and look forward to hearing stories of your amazing races after you cross the finish line. Along with being an anniversary race, this will be the first year both the longer course around San Clemente Island, a qualifier for this summer’s Transpac Race, and the new short course, for those starting from San Diego Harbor are running concurrently. The 62 nm San Diego course is great for those who want a shorter race to build their skills. The scenic route around San Clemente Island, at 176 nm, provides more of a challenge for larger boats whether they are entering the Transpac this July or not. During your stay in the growing and friendly City of Ensenada, BajaRama will offer complimentary shuttle bus service from the hotel into town and back. This former fishing village has many shops, restaurants, beaches and activities to explore. If you are staying longer or looking for an adventure, we’ve got a lovely winery tour that explores the area’s growing wine industry. Much of the fun NOSA offers our racers is a result of our kind and generous sponsors. I’d like to thank each one, especially the City of Newport Beach and the City of Ensenada, for their valuable contributions that not only lets NOSA host the race, but allows us to create an experience sailors and their families will remember long into the future. And when it comes to gratitude, I cannot express my personal appreciation enough for the efforts of NOSA volunteers, the people who make the race happen. I am so honored to work these dedicated individuals. Finally, a special thanks to those who make charitable donations at the annual VIP Reception. Your contributions make a remarkable and visible difference to CAEPA, a local school for autistic children. Sail safe.
