Why did Debra Winger take a break from the movies?
—Carrie R., Stuyvesant, N.Y. A: The star of Urban Cowboy, An Officer
and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment took a hiatus in the mid-1990s because she wasn’t happy with the kind of roles being offered her. The threetime Oscar nominee, now 61, backed off to raise her children, teach a general-ed class at Harvard and write a book (Undiscovered). But she’s been back on the movie scene for several years in independent films, and since 2016 she’s been starring as Maggie Bennett in the Netflix series
The Ranch. And on May 5 you can see her as Mary in the film The Lovers, about a married couple who cheat on their lovers—with each other.
