Vegas repeats in Canada

Jhonattan Vegas successful­ly defended his RBC Canadian Open title at Glen Abbey in Oakville, beating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

Vegas’ approach from the left bunker in the playoff on the par-five 18th hit the grass just above the sand lip and went through the green. The 32-year-old Venezuelan chipped to a foot and won when Hoffman’s birdie try from the back bunker slid past the hole. Vegas closed with a seven-under 65 to match Hoffman at 21-under 267. Hoffman birdied the 18th for a 68. Ian Poulter was a stroke back after a 64.

Bernhard Langer won the Senior British Open in rain and wind at Royal Porthcawl in Bridgend, Wales, for his record-extending 10th senior major title and fifth in the last 10. The 59-year-old German star closed with an even-par 72 to finish at four-under 280 and beat Corey Pavin by three strokes . ... Mi Hyang Lee won the Ladies Scottish Open in Irvine for her second LPGA Tour title. Lee shot a six-under 66 to finish at six-under 282, one shot ahead of Hall of Famer Karrie Webb and Mi Jung Hur.

Lee May, an All-Star slugger who put up 100-RBI seasons for three different teams, died. He was 74.

New England Patriots defensive end/ linebacker Rob Ninkovich retired.

John Isner rode an overpoweri­ng service game to his fourth BB&T Atlanta Open title, beating Ryan Harrison 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7) . ... Katerina Siniakova defeated Caroline Wozniacki, who struggled with a wrist injury, in the Swedish Open final 6-3, 6-4 in Bastad.

Stellar Wind won the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar, a 11⁄16-mile race run on a slightly overcast but otherwise ideal afternoon in front of an enthusiast­ic crowd of 12,338. As part of the schedule of the “Win and You’re In” Challenge series races, the victory captured a $300,000 purse and qualifies the 5-year-old for the $2-million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar on Nov. 3. Stellar Wind’s final time was 1:43.92 and her win for trainer John Sadler and jockey Victor Espinoza cashed in at $3.

Stellar Wind, who won the same event last year, broke out well on the outside, coasted slightly behind Vale Dori of Argentina for much of the race, took a short lead in the stretch and held off Vale Dori in the final sixteenth by a neck. — Ivan Carter

Girvin rallied in the stretch to beat McCraken by a nose for a 9-1 upset in the $1million Haskell Invitation­al at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Junior quarterbac­k J.T. Daniels of Santa Ana Mater Dei announced via Twitter that he has committed to USC. Daniels completed 75% of his passes last season for 4,849 yards and 67 touchdowns with only six intercepti­ons in 14 games. — Eric Sondheimer
