Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov upset top-seeded Rafael Nadal 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the third round of the Rogers Cup at Montreal. The 18-yearold Shapovalov advanced to a quarterfin­al meeting Friday night with France’s Adrian Mannarino, who defeated Hyeon Chung of South Korea 6-3, 6-3. Roger Federer overcame a weak first set to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spaniard David Ferrer and will face 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, who outlasted Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) . ... Karolina Pliskova advanced to the quarterfin­als at the women’s Rogers Cup at Toronto when Japanese qualifier Naomi Osaka was forced to retire. The world’s topranked player moved on with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 victory when Osaka bowed out because of an abdominal injury. In a later match, fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over ninth-seeded Venus Williams.

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will have a total knee replacemen­t surgery, leading the Blue Devils to cancel this month's exhibition trip to the Dominican Republic. The school announced that the Hall of Fame coach will have the procedure this weekend on his right leg at the university hospital in Durham. Krzyzewski, 70, will be released within three days to begin a rehabilita­tion program at Duke.

Central Florida extended the contract of basketball coach Johnny Dawkins after a successful first season. The school said that Dawkins’ current six-year contract has been extended by a year through 2023. Last season, Dawkins guided the Knights to a 24-12 record and an appearance in the NIT Final Four. UCF doubled its win total from the previous season.

Wisconsin senior linebacker Jack Cichy will sit out the season after suffering a knee injury. Coach Paul Chryst said that Cichy, a captain and former walk-on, tore an anterior cruciate ligament during practice Tuesday. Cichy had 60 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season despite sitting out the final seven games . ... Nebraska’s Jaevon McQuitty, a promising freshman receiver, suffered a season-ending knee injury, coach Mike Riley announced. McQuitty, the top-ranked high school player in Missouri last season, was injured during a blocking drill, Riley said.

NCAA member schools will be required to provide yearly sexual violence education for all college athletes, coaches and athletics administra­tors under a policy announced by the organizati­on's board of governors. Campus leaders such as athletic directors, school presidents and Title IX coordinato­rs will be required to attest that athletes, coaches and administra­tors have been educated on sexual violence.

The Seattle Storm fired Jenny Boucek and promoted assistant Gary Kloppenbur­g to interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Storm have lost four consecutiv­e games and are fighting to make the WNBA playoffs. Kloppenbur­g last was a head coach at Tulsa in 2012-13.

A high school football player lifting a large log with teammates as part of a Navy SEALs-style drill was hit in the head by the log and died in Farmingvil­le, N.Y., raising questions about adapting such military training to young athletes. Joshua Mileto ,a 16 year-old Sachem East High junior, and about five of his teammates were carrying the log overhead when the accident happened at a preseason exercise camp supervised by a half-dozen coaches, Suffolk County police said. The 5-foot-6, 134-pound wide receiver and defensive back later was declared dead at a hospital.
