at No. 5 Clemson 56, Kent State 3: New starting quarterback Kelly Bryant passed for 236 yards and a touchdown and ran for 77 yards in his debut as Deshaun Watson’s replacement, and the Tigers rolled in what amounted to a glorified scrimmage. Clemson gained 665 yards to 120 yards for the Golden Flashes (0-1), who seemed more intent on getting back to Ohio unharmed, passing the ball just five times with one completion for one yard.

at No. 18 Miami 41, Bethune-Cookman 13: Malik Rosier passed for 217 yards and three touchdowns in his debut as the full-time starting quarterback, and Mark Walton ran for 148 yards and two scores in the Hurricanes’ opener. Rosier completed 17 of 28 passes and Braxton Berrios, Lawrence Cager and Darrell Langham had touchdown catches for Miami, which scored on five of its first six possessions.

at Pittsburgh 28, Youngstown State 21 (OT): Jester Weah hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Max Browne on the opening possession of overtime and Bricen Garner picked off a Hunter Wells pass in the end zone to clinch it for the Panthers, who blew a 21-point halftime lead in their season opener. Browne had a tepid debut for Pitt after transferring from USC, completing 17 of 24 passes for 140 yards and the winning touchdown.

at Virginia 28, William & Mary 10: Kurt Benkert threw three touchdown passes and the Cavaliers began Bronco Mendenhall’s second season as coach with a solid win over a lower-division opponent, a big improvement on their 37-20 loss to Richmond in last year’s opener.

at Duke 60, North Carolina Central 7: Daniel Jones passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns, freshman Brittain Brown rushed for 120 yards and a score in only 10 carries, and the Blue Devils routed the lower-division Eagles in their opener.
