Maxwell kneels during anthem

Catcher Bruce Maxwell of the Oakland Athletics on Saturday became the first MLB player to kneel during the national anthem.

Maxwell adopted a protest started by former San Francisco 49ers quarterbac­k Colin Kaepernick in response to police treatment of black people.

The A’s said in a statement they “respect and support all of our players’ constituti­onal rights and freedom of expression.”
